{"id":1530,"date":"2018-03-25T16:59:34","date_gmt":"2018-03-25T16:59:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theenergy.coop\/blog\/is-forest-biomass-electricity-carbon-neutral-copy\/"},"modified":"2023-08-18T10:41:31","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T10:41:31","slug":"battery-storage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theenergy.coop\/test\/blog\/battery-storage\/","title":{"rendered":"New rules for electricity storage."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theenergy.coop\/about\/staff\/morgan-pitts\/\">Morgan Pitts<\/a>\u00a03\/25\/2018<\/p>\n<p>In February, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferc.gov\/media\/news-releases\/2018\/2018-1\/02-15-18-E-1.asp#.WrPryWrwapo\">issued new rules<\/a> that, for the first time, enable storage (aka large, utility-scale batteries) to compete with other sources of electricity on the wholesale energy market. This means that electric utilities now have a valuable new tool to manage the intermittency of renewable energy resources which will enable the further replacement of conventional generation with renewables.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this important? It addresses two key challenges: Batteries allow the provision of reliable electricity generated by intermittent renewable sources and the improvement of grid security by allowing for a more local and decentralized electricity grid.
