PEA awarded DOE grant to expand energy education in PA

By Morgan Pitts 11/5/2018

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA) for receiving a $1.25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The grant award will support the expansion of the Find Your Power solar training program for Philadelphia youth.

PEA will use the award funding to establish the nation’s first Clean Energy Program of Study for high school students. PEA will work with the School District of Philadelphia to develop a three year curriculum to train students for careers in the clean energy sector. If recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, it will unlock funding for school districts across the state to offer PEA’s curriculum.

The Energy Co-op has been proud to support PEA’s education programs over the past year. Most recently, we hosted a PEA Philadelphia Youth Network high school intern for the summer. While at the Co-op, he was able to gain hands on experience on the business and marketing side of renewable energy. You can read his blog post about training to be a solar installer and his summer experience here. We look forward to continued collaboration on this and other future projects!
